How Would You, as a Young Catholic Woman, Navigate the Challenges We Face in the World Today?

I have learned that taking action and getting involved has their impact. Specifically, through my youth group, Foundations. Foundations takes service trips or Worktours annually serving and learning about the connection between faith and current events. On these trips, you disconnect from everyday life and truly connect with others face-to-face. Worktours have helped me to focus on the task at hand, to connect with my faith, and apply the Catholic teachings to life.

Of these teachings, one that stands out- everyone is worth getting to know. Everyone has knowledge and wisdom to share, they just need someone to listen. Jesus walked with the people He helped. On these service trips, we are not there to be a savior, but meant to walk with those we are helping. As a woman, it can be challenging to feel heard, but I want to be a voice for myself and others. I want to make a difference and the church has taught me that it is possible. One day during mass we sang a song inspired by the words of a strong woman in faith, Mother Teresa. She said, “We can do no great things, only small things with great love”. These words perplexed me, why shouldn’t we do “great things”? I then realized her philosophy; simple actions make the biggest difference. I try to live by these words every day and have come back to her quote in times of doubt.

In a world lacking love and compassion, it is important to remember their impact. Through the Wortours, I realize the importance of solidarity with those from all walks of life and the effect it can have on the world. As I navigate into adulthood, I strive to defend those who need it and stand with them in times of despair. As a woman of strength and faith, I will remember that I have a voice. I will always remember that support waits for me in God. And I will do small things with great love.
